Nine wins in a row at the break. A 9-0 road trip, which this franchise had not pulled off since 1977. Last in the American League a few weeks ago, now a half game out of the wild card. So yes, I enjoy Boston sports. is out of the drawer. Cautiously so.
Last July they carried a ten game winning streak into the All-Star break. You remember what happened next. They dropped five of their first seven coming out of it, the shirt went back in the drawer, and we all returned to our regularly scheduled programming of watching anyway.
That's the thing nobody is saying out loud this week. Everyone knows it. Everyone is also checking the wild card standings on their phone in the middle of dinner, because being a Red Sox fan means holding both of those things at once and calling it normal.
What a Red Sox Shirt Says in July
Wearing the gear right now is a statement with fine print. It says I'm in. It does not say I believe. There's a difference, and every fan reading this knows exactly where that line sits, because we've been walking it since before 2004.
Four days off now. Four days of the front office hopefully not screwing this up, four days of refusing to say "second half push" out loud where the baseball gods can hear it.
If you need a shirt that captures the exact emotional register of this week, the I enjoy Boston sports. tee is doing a lot of work with one period. Punctuation as a coping mechanism.
