When Boston’s new women’s pro baseball team was announced in July 2026, the name was one of those things that made more sense the second you knew the story. The Boston Hunters are named for Harriot K. Hunt, a 19th-century Boston physician and women’s rights advocate who applied to Harvard Medical School twice and was denied because she was a woman. She went on to build a successful medical practice anyway, which feels like a pretty solid person to name a baseball team after.
The osprey in the Hunters identity ties into the name too. The league describes it as a focused coastal predator that picks a target and commits, which is considerably more elegant than our original reaction, which was basically: excellent bird, no notes. The Hunters were one of the four inaugural Women’s Pro Baseball League teams in 2026, along with New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Their first season was played in Springfield, Illinois, before the league’s longer-term home-city plans take shape.
When the name and logo dropped, we immediately started working on our own Boston women’s baseball design.
